DARE Creative Writing Project

  • You are going to use a photograph of the negative consequences of drug misuse as an inspiration for a piece of creative writing.

  • This is a piece of writing that will be marked by both Constable Andy and your classroom teacher.

  • Once you have examined all of the photos, choose one that you wish to write about and make a note of its name and number from the back.

  • Then you will have to start brainstorming your ideas for your story. Think about who, what, where, when, why and how. You will have to create names and locations as some of the pictures give you very limited information.

  • Next you will need to think about what style of writing you would like to do. You could choose,
A newspaper report,
From the point of view of the main character,
Diary notes,
Look at it from an external perspective,
A police report,
A blog,
Or any other style checked by Constable Andy or your Teacher.

  • Finally get writing. There is no minimum or maximum word count for this story but if you do not put in the effort you may be asked to start over again. Remember to base your story around the picture but use it to be creative.

  • You will have approximately two weeks to do this work as it needs to be ready to hand in at the beginning of the week starting Monday the 15th of September.

Any questions - please ask your teacher or you can contact Constable Andy on andrew.napier@police.govt.nz
